How to Care for Skin in Winter

For many people, the cold clear days of winter bring more than just a rosy glow to the cheeks. They also bring uncomfortable dryness to the skin of the face, hands, and feet. For some people, the problem is worse than just a general tight, dry feeling: They get skin so dry it results in flaking, cracking, even eczema.

Dry skin is caused by an insufficient amount of oil produced by the sebaceous glands. Another cause is dehydration – the cells hold less moisture. Although skin types are often hereditary, dry skin is affected by environment, age, and attention.

1. Avoid harsh (typically colored, fragrant or antibacterial) soaps and stick with mild non-drying soaps.

2. Apply your moisturizing cream immediately after bathing and toweling dry. This will seal in the moisture. Use moisturizing creams and ointments that are more appropriate for the body than the face.

3. Do not use hot water, enjoying a hot steamy shower during the cold winter months can cause more harm than pleasure. Hot water can cause broken capillaries which produce red blemishes.

4. Don’t forget about your lips, whether you use lip gloss or lipstick, make sure it has a SPF 15 for protection from the low temperatures and harsh winds.
